Why difficulty options are not cheating

Picking an easier mode is not cheating. It is choosing the experience you actually want, and good games make that easy.

Why difficulty options are not cheating
J jjunior.net

There is a stubborn idea in some corners of gaming that choosing an easier difficulty is a kind of cheating, a confession that you are not good enough. We think that is nonsense, and bad for games. Difficulty options are not a moral test. They are a design tool that lets one game serve very different players, and the best games treat them that way.

You are not competing with anyone

In a single-player game, there is no leaderboard of dignity. The person who plays on an easier setting and finishes happy got exactly what they paid for. The idea that the harder mode is the "real" game assumes everyone plays for the same reason, when in truth people play to relax, to be challenged, to see a story, or just to pass twenty minutes. All of those are valid.

Difficulty is part of the fun, not a gate to it

Good difficulty design is about matching the challenge to the player so the game stays in that sweet spot where it is hard enough to engage but not so hard it stops being fun. That spot is different for everyone. Letting the player choose is not lowering the bar, it is letting them set it where the game is most enjoyable for them. We touched on finding that balance in how to read a difficulty curve.

It widens who gets to play

Difficulty options are also an accessibility feature. For a player with limited reaction time or motor control, an adjustable speed or an assist is the difference between playing and not playing at all. Calling that cheating tells a chunk of your audience they are not welcome, which is a strange thing for any game to want to say.

There is no wrong way to enjoy a game you paid for with your own time.

The maker's view

From our side of the screen, every difficulty option is just another way to say yes to a player. We would rather someone finish on the gentlest setting and smile than bounce off a wall and uninstall. A game is not diminished because more people got to enjoy it on their own terms.
